After our first successful campaign called #walking4hope Tshembo Africa Foundation will continue to support the vulnerable community on the Western side of the Kruger National Park with wholesome food parcels!

Between 30 April and 31 July 2020 we raised ZAR882’092 and were able to deliver 1,100 food parcels to people in need. The content of one parcel consisted of following:

- one box of a variety of fresh vegetables (about 10-15 kg)
- one big bag of 10-12kg Maize Meal
- one bag of essential dry food such as coffee, tea, rice, sugar, pasta, oil, canned food etc. (about 15kg)

This means that with our distributed total of 1,100 food parcels we have delivered

12 tons of Maize meal
15 tons of vegetables and herbs
80,000 buffs

to help against the spread of the Corona virus to families in need, old age homes, people who lost their jobs due to COVID 19 pandemic and their families, as well as to schools and children in need.

We also bought produce from smallholder farmers in the surrounding areas for the incredible amount of  ZAR383'089 which secured their livelihood and their dependents.

The COVID-19 pandemic left hundert of guides, trackers, chefs, domestic workers without work as the tourism died overnight. Where other countries lifted their lockdown after a few weeks, South Africa is still under strict lockdown regulations, borders are still closed and international tourism is still not permitted.

On average, one employed person supports about 6-8 people in a household. During lockdown many retrenched people had to return to their families and therefore the household had even more mouth to feed.

By supporting this campaign you are giving people without income hope. Hope, to get through next week without hunger or wondering how they can feed their children.

Our beneficary, The Hlokomela Herb Garden, is primarily funded by supplying Lodges, Restaurants in Hoedspruit and surrounding areas, with herbs, vegetables.  They employ and teach local communities about organic gardening, and hence offer both education and employment.

Both Lodges and Restaurants have been negatively affected by COVID-19 and the subsequent  lockdown and had to close completely. The tourism sector has taken a huge knock and it will still take a long time to get back up and running as their main income are tourists from overseas.  Local restaurants also rely heavily on tourism and therefore have also been affected hugely.

As such, the Tshembo Africa Foundation's reason to support Hlokomela, is to ensure that the Herb Garden, vegetable growers, education and employment is kept going. For the local communities, who have a huge population of people employed in both the tourism and the restaurant business and are now mostly out of work, we are assisting with food parcels to ensure the health and well-being of all of these people mentioned before.

Hlokomela (Hoedspruit Training Trust) is a small, not-for-profit, HIV&Aids healthcare organisation in the Mopani District of Limpopo, South Africa, that has mobilised to help fight the spread of the Corona Virus in the Greater Kruger to Canyons Biosphere area. This area is home to many rural communities already fighting a wide range of immune deficiencies, like HIV, TB & diabetes.

We commit to actively promote local food security enterprises, stimulate dynamic local economic activity, inspire a holistic, lifestyles approach to community & personal wellness and advocate a progressive welfare programme for our key population groups. All sourcing is respectful, safe, ethical, inclusive and sustainable. We abide by a strict code of ethics that embodies the spirit of Ubuntu, care for others and respect for all life.
